Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking is an accomplished scientist and physicist. He has written a number of books related to scientific discoveries we learn about today. Much of his work is along the line of what happens in outside space with black holes. Born during the early 1940s, Hawking had a strong interest for scientific elements including the sky. When he was in college he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. This has kept him confined to a wheelchair for most of his life, but this has not kept him from making some of the most significant accomplishments known in the world of science today.

Hawking was born into an influential family. His mother was an Oxford college graduate (something many people didn’t think about during this time due to varied opinions on whether women should be able to attend college). His father also graduated from Oxford College and went to become a medical researcher highly respected in his field. Hawking family included three siblings with one of them being adopted during the mid-1950s. While Hawking is known to have an exceptional outlook in the world of science, when he was in high school he wasn’t seen as a bright student.

During the early 1960s he graduated with honors from the University of Cambridge. He received a Ph.D. in cosmology. During this time he was diagnosed with ALS after symptoms took a turn for the worse. He was having issues with his speech, falling and tripping as he walked. It seemed like it took doctors some time to really understand his condition. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a nerve condition that makes nerves in muscles throughout the body to shut down. Doctors didn’t expect Hawking to live no longer than 2 years.

His diagnosis helped him understand there were things he could still do, and others feel it helped him become the accomplished scientist and physicist he is known for being. His disease made him more focused on things around him. He stated he wasn’t as interested in his studies before the diagnosis was made. He later conducted a number of researches that included black holes and the stars. He developed a fascination of how the universe started. Because of his work people view the universe differently. He would go on to publish books that detail his findings that would make him a scientific celebrity.
